Interest Group in Ocular Allergy: strategic program for 2014
Ocular allergy includes a group of very common and less common hypersensitivity disorders of the ocular surface diagnosed and managed not only by ophthalmologists but also by allergists, pediatricians and rhinologists. However, ocular allergies are frequently mis-diagnosed and not properly managed. The diagnosis is usually based on clinical history and signs and symptoms, applying in vivo and in vitro assays when identification of the specific allergens(s) is required for clinical management. To date, no specific tests are available for diagnosing the different forms of ocular allergy. The lack of recommendations on diagnosis of these forms is considered a medical need for both allergists and ophthalmologists.
After the publication of new nomenclature and classification (Allergy, 2012), the Interest Group on Ocular Allergy has almost completed a manuscript on the use of “Conjunctival provocation test in daily practice”, for submission early in 2014. The next stage is to prepare a new document focused on tools and recommendations for the diagnosis of the different ocular allergic diseases, for use not only by allergists but also by ophthalmologists. Our ambitious goal is to raise awareness of the ocular and vision problems related to allergy and other immune disorders, and for EAACI to promote and support basic and clinical research on Ocular Allergy.Last updated: 02 December 2014 -
Minutes from the Annual IGOA Business Meeting, Barcelona Monday June 9, 2015
We had an excellent presentation from Dr. Luis Delgado (Porto, Portugal) on ‘The psychological effects of atopic dermatitis’. This interesting issue was very well received and generated much discussion, especially around the scoring systems used.
The Annual Business Meeting was opened by Andrea Leonardi (AL), the Chairman.
The newly elected IGOA Board Members were welcomed alphabetically as:

Update on progress of the Task Force Group entitled “Diagnostic Tools in Ocular Allergy” was reported (AL). The TF group met earlier in the day to review the latest draft and identified key words to be used in the manuscript. The group is aiming to meet in September 2015 to finalise the paper ready for submission, and all TF members are encouraged to attend.
Future themes for TF groups were discussed and include:
- Ocular Allergy treatments and adverse reactions;
- Topical treatment in ocular allergy;
- Tear sampling in allergy;
- Food allergy and the eye;
- Medicamentosa.
The next TF proposal is due in September including a rationale and a list of authors. IGOA must have this prepared at the end of July.
Ophthalmology Desk in the Clinical Village: AL thanked Drs. Perez Formigo and Chorzepi for their help in manning the desk.
The IGOA EAACI 2015 Symposium „Clinical Aspects of Ocular Allergy“ was well attended. It was observed that there is an interest in eye structure and function, which should perhaps be included as a topic in a future session.
Suggested presentations for the 2016 Vienna meeting were then discussed:
Symposium
A symposium entitled ‘Barrier Dysfunction at the ocular surface’ has been approved for next year. Proposed speakers include: Dr Barisani (Vienna).
Another session approved for Vienna is ‘Diagnostic Tools in Ocular Allergy’, speakers to include AL, JLF, SG.
IGOA Business Meeting
Rudolph Valenta (Vienna) to present his work with ISAC, was proposed by A. Baye.
Postgraduate Course
To be proposed with the pediatric IG: Managing a child with allergic conjunctivitis
Sharma Vibha (UK)

Proposed sessions agreed by the Board will be submitted next week by A Leonardi.
Other topics for discussion included whether the eye could be added as a surrogate marker in the EPAD Allergy School, which targets general practitioners.
Those attending this meeting were asked to sign as interested members, leaving their name and email addresses.
AL thanked the members of the Interest Group on Ocular Allergy (IGOA) for their cooperation and enthusiastic efforts and invited new members to joint the IGOA. Thereafter, the Annual Business Meeting was closed.
The next Business Meeting will be held in during EAACI in Vienna, June 2016.
