Skin Allergy Club 2018
Description of the Task force
The Skin Allergy Club (SAC) is organized by the EAACI Dermatology Section and aimed to promote the communication and exchange of experience among young clinicians and researchers working in the field of skin allergy. The SAC is held in Zurich, usually starting on Friday afternoon at the EAACI Headquarters (first session) and finishing midday Saturday at the University Hospital for Dermatology and Allergy (second session).
Participation is competitive: Although the Call for applications is sent out to all EAACI Junior Members of the Dermatology Section, only ten JMs are selected based on the quality of their submitted abstract, CV and motivation letters. Each participant has an opportunity to make a short presentation (10-15 min) about the topic of their interest followed by a group discussion moderated by invited professors. Selected topics include urticaria, angioedema, immediate hypersensitivity reactions in the skin, autoinflammatory skin diseases, mastocytosis, vasculitis, autoimmune skin diseases, infectious skin diseases, contact dermatitis and atopic eczema. The guided walk through the Department of Dermatology of University Hospital, Zurich is organized after the second session.
For the first time from 2018 on the abstracts of successful applicants will be published in the SAC abstract book and uploaded to the EAACI website and a Certificate for the best presentation will be awarded to the one Junior Member. Each accepted participant will get 300 EUR for travel expenses plus overnight accommodation and dinner in Zurich. Drinks and finger food are provided during the sessions.
Report of the SAC 2018
The SAC reached its fifth anniversary on 8-9 June 2018 in the relaxing and friendly atmosphere of the EAACI Headquarters and hospitable and academic environment of the University Hospital, Department of Dermatology, Zurich by kind invitation of Prof. Peter Schmid-Grendelmeier and Dr Martin Glatz.
A wide spectrum of cutaneous allergy was covered: from atopic dermatitis and eczema to urticaria, contact dermatitis and use of confocal microscopy in the dermatologic allergy. The main focus of this SAC was on mastocytosis with 4 of 5 mastocytosis-related abstracts accepted.
Ten selected delegates came from different countries throughout the world including the Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Turkey, India and Italy. The discussions were moderated by Prof. Knut Brockow (Chairperson of the EAACI Dermatology Section, Germany), Prof. Charlotte Gotthard Mørtz (Secretary of the EAACI Dermatology Section, Denmark) and Dr Martin Glatz (Board member of the EAACI Dermatology Section, Switzerland), well-known experts in the field. During the first session, Prof. Brockow presented an interesting lecture about allergic reactions in mastocytosis, whereas Prof. Mørtz gave important hints on differential diagnosis between atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis in children.
Participants had dinner in a typical Swiss restaurant (Riedbach) and stayed overnight at the Ibis Zurich Messe Airport Hotel. Dr Glatz finished the second session on Saturday with an interactive lecture on atopic dermatitis and then guided participants through the Department of Dermatology of the University Hospital. The Certificate for the best presentation was awarded to Dr Chen Hu (the Netherlands). Dr Hu shared her experience about the SAC:
“The Skin Allergy Club is an unique opportunity to discuss and interpret your results in detail with fellow junior and senior scientists, and clinicians from all over the world in the beautiful city of Zürich. Constructive suggestions were given in an open and safe environment. Meeting all the participants and learning about their research inspired and motivated me, both academically and personally. I am grateful to the EAACI for organizing this meeting and providing a fruitful ground for junior members to grow in our role as future leaders in the field of Dermatology and Allergy research.”

Report from the section board meeting Copenhagen 2014
The Dermatology section BM started traditionally with a lecture, now given by Prof. Vera Mahler on patch testing with patients’ own materials. Afterwards we had an update from the section chair Prof. Bindslev-Jensen on the preparation of the Skin allergy meeting 2014 in Krakow, Poland.
A report from the active task forces to the section was presented, namely the task forces on hereditary angioedema, autoinflammatory syndromes, and patch testing in children.

3. Introduction new chair and secretary
Carsten Bindslev-Jensen thanks the outgoing chair and secretary for their tremendous work as well as the outgoing board, and presents the new board (see above, all present except for Jonathan White/apologies)
Radoslaw Spiewak states that there is a need to work out thoughts of the section about the status of allergen patch and prick test preparations Clinical Trials Directive 2001/20/EC. It is agreed that a questionnaire will be sent out to all section members and the results will be evaluated on the board level before a decision is made on if and how to act
Thorsten Zuberbier gives a short overview on the status of the new urticarial guidelines to be published soon
Stephan Weidinger asks all members to check if they are listed in the dermatology section membership registry, since there appears to be some confusion. Carsten Bindslev-Jensen will suggest the EAACI to ask members to sign up for sections and IGs during the renewal of their membership
Carsten Bindslev-Jensen reports about the status of the scientific programme for the 2013 congress in Copenhagen. There is still a chance to make proposals for some additional speakers/topics, in particular for Meet-the-Expert and Pro&Con sessions. Skin allergy in focus – report from the Skin Allergy Meeting, Krakow, 18-20.09.2014
Krakow welcomed the Skin allergy meeting (SAM) from 18 to 20 September 2014. More than 190 attendees from 39 countries and 26 speakers contributed to the success of this international event. Specialists in dermatology, allergy and clinical immunology, pediatrics and basic sciences had the chance to get acquainted with the novel findings in the field of cutaneous allergic diseases.
For the first time the three day program was structured on disease-based sessions, topics included atopic and contact dermatitis, skin drug adverse reactions, urticaria, anaphylaxis, mastocytosis, food allergy and the skin and others. The highlight in each session were the pro- and con- debate on the selected topics such as the role of patch testing in children with eczema and the importance of skin testing in drug allergy. Last but not least practical demonstrations on different topics were carried out, e.g. patch testing, and the use of autoinjectors, which were highly valued by the delegates.
The poster session as well as the oral communications gave the chance to youngsters to present rare and intriguing clinical studies and results from their studies.
The warm an friendly atmosphere created by the organizers in the face of the SAM chairs, Radoslaw Spiewak and Carsten Bindslev-Jensen, the Polish Society of Allergology, the EAACI dermatology section, and the EAACI officers, contributed to the success of the meeting. The delegates enjoyed nice weather in the great city of Krakow- rich in historical and cultural activities.
EAACI offered an unique opportunity to all delegates as each registered participant could get a free registration for one intern. In addition to the travel grants, this gave the chance to lots of young colleagues to meet face to face with the most designated researchers in the field of skin allergy.

Skin Allergy Club 2013
The Skin Allergy Club celebrated its second meeting on 20-21 April 2013 in the hospitable and academic environment of the University Department of Dermatology, Zurich by kind invitation of Professor Peter Schmid-Grendelmeier. Delegates attended from Armenia, Croatia, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. They each presented topics of their choice followed by a round-table discussion covering a wide spectrum of cutaneous allergy including preventative strategies in atopic dermatitis, the potential application of microarray to diagnostic testing and specific immunotherapy, autoinflammatory syndromes, solar urticaria, autoimmune progesterone dermatitis and vasculitis. The discussions were moderated by Professor Antti Lauerma and Dr Clive Grattan, Secretary and Chair of the Dermatology section. Delegates stayed overnight at the Zurcherhof hotel in downtown Niederdorf and dined at the Crazy Cow restaurant. Feedback on this EAACI funded learning initiative was excellent. It was agreed that this model of small group learning could be extended to other clinical areas within EAACI, offering a personal and interactive alternative to other EAACI educational opportunities, such as Allergy Schools and Focused meetings.

Urticaria 2004, Consensus Meeting

Date: 1 – 2 October, 2004Following the successful symposium in Berlin in the year 2000, the 2nd Consensus Meeting on Urticaria wants to provide again a platform for lively discussions on the fascinating topic of urticaria. International experts in the field of urticaria have been invited to review the current knowledge and the recent advances in pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment. During interactive panel discussions the consensus protocols published after the previous meeting shall be thoroughly revised. In addition, sessions for oral and posters presentations are planned.

2nd International Consensus Meeting: Urticaria 2004
Berlin, Germany, 1-2 October 2004
The Charité University Hospital in Berlin hosted again the International Consensus Meeting on Urticaria after the successful first one in the year 2000. The famous Campus Virchow Klinikum was the venue. While the first meeting had been organized by the Department of Dermatology and Allergy at the Charité, Urticaria 2004 is a joined initiative of the newly established European Centre of Allergy Research Fondation (ECARF) in collaboration with EAACI Dermatology Section and GA²LEN. By promoting the development of updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of urticaria all these organizations and programs follows their common aim: standardized evidence based management of allergic diseases.
After 4 years of development in the field, new ideas, approaches and experience are available. A significant number of young scientists and clinicians found a platform to report new data in Oral Presentations Sessions and lively discussions on the fascinating different faces of urticaria followed the reports. The issues about infectious and autoimmune genesis of urticaria were discussed. In fact both hypotheses are still debatable. The importance of Quality of Life studies on urticaria with validated questionnaires was pointed out. In addition, case reports of anaphylactic reactions to different substances as well as successful treatment possibilities were reported.
Renowned international experts in the field of urticaria have been invited to review the current knowledge and the recent advances in pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment. After the welcome message by the head of ECARF and chair of the organizing committee, Torsten Zuberbier (Germany), P. Skov (Denmark) gave a detailed update on pathophysiology of mast cells, the cells that play the principal part in urticaria. M. Kozel (The Netherlands) lectured on the epidemiology and socioeconomic consequences of urticaria. The “father” of Autologous Serum Skin Test (ASST), C.E.H. Grattan (U.K.) discussed the relevancy of the terms acute and chronic urticaria (the chronic urticaria is in fact chronic from the very beginning), while A. Zalewska (Poland) focused of physical urticarias. W. Canonica (Italy) promoted recently developed and validated by his group new questionnaire evaluating the impact of urticaria on Health Related Quality of Life. M. Maurer (Germany) provoked the interest of the delegates with a new possible pathogenic mechanism of chronic urticaria: autoallergy i.e. IgE directed against patient’s TPO. K. Hartmann went into the issues of the related to urticaria diseases like urticaria pigmentosa, urticaria vasculitis and hereditary angioedema being the main differential diagnosis of the disease. Finally, B. Wedi (Germany) summarized the randomized trials in chronic urticaria pointing out that high quality studies are still lacking with one exception: non-sedation antihistamines. The specificity of the treatment of chronic urticaria patients with non-sedation antihistamines was in the highlight of M. Church’s talk (UK).
More than 400 delegates took part in the interactive panel discussions and the consensus protocols for definition, classification, routine diagnosis and management of urticaria published after the previous meeting was thoroughly revised according to recent developments. The organizers promised that the proceedings of the symposium as well as the consensus report will shortly appear in the Journal of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology “Allergy”. The interesting scientific and social program made the Second International Consensus Meeting: Urticaria 2004 an unforgettable event. Perhaps all the participants will be looking forward to Berlin 2008….

Guidelines on Urticaria
All major aspects of urticaria and many novel findings from ongoing research projects were presented to and discussed by the more than 400 specialists from 20 different European countries attending this conference. Most importantly, the URTICARIA 2004 participants, led by an international expert panel, drafted new consensus guidelines for diagnosing and treating patients with urticaria using an interactive voting system. These guidelines will be issued by GA²LEN and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) early 2005. “Finally, clinicians that care for urticaria patients are provided with advice that is both based on a systematic review of the published literature and supported by many experts from all over Europe,” summarized the expert panel. “These guidelines will certainly aid in the identification and treatment of underlying causes, triggers and symptoms of urticaria, and we hope they will help to reduce unnecessary and sometimes harmful variations in medical practice.”

Food Allergy Training Course

The EAACI/GA2LEN training course in Food Allergy will be held at Hindsgavl Castle, Middelfart, Denmark from April 8th-11th, 2006. Course responsible are the Sections of Dermatology and Pediatrics together with the EAACI Interest Group on Food Allergy. The number of participants is limited to 85.The aim of this course is to update clinicians and other wishing to diagnose and treat children and adults with food allergy. The focus will be on the practical aspects of diagnosis and treatment. Theoretical lectures will be mixed with clinical cases and practical demonstrations on patients (videotaped). Participants are encouraged to bring their own clinical cases. These should be announced in advance on the Clinical Cases Submission Form. Priority will be given to clinicians working with food allergy and to those presenting clinical cases.
