European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma
The European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma is a policy forum to share expertise and align interests engaging with EU policy-makers and stakeholders on allergy and asthma health. We believe in evidence-based and patient-centred policies. Therefore, we provide reliable data for evidence-based policy making so that allergy and asthma are on the political agenda of the EU as the high-prevalence chronic diseases they are.
The Interest Group (IG) is an informal group of MEPs committed to policy actions to address unmet needs of allergy and asthma at EU level. It serves as a forum to share expertise and align interests engaging with relevant EU policymakers and stakeholders on allergy and asthma health. It strives to be a source of good data for evidence-based policy making.
The Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma is meant to serve as a unifying platform in a heterogenous environment and wishes to:
- Contribute to EU policies on chronic diseases to reflect the needs of allergy and asthma patients and better prevent these diseases
- Improve EU policies against outdoor air pollution and promote action to tackle indoor pollution
- Foster European research in environmental health, with an emphasis on unmet needs of allergy and asthma research
- Inform on action needed on labelling of chemicals and allergens in consumer products
- Facilitate the exchange of best healthcare practices and recognition of Allergology as a full medical specialty across the EU, otherwise patients with allergy and asthma will not receive adequate treatment
The ORGANISATION:
The Interest Group is chaired by MEP Sirpa Pietikainen and co-chaired by MEP Nessa Childers. The Secretariat of the Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma is led by EAACI in partnership with the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) and is working closely to voice the needs of people living with allergy and asthma.

The Allergy Awareness Event “Test Your Allergies 2016” in European Parliament ends with promising outcomes
From the 26th to the 28th of April, EAACI co-organised with the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients Associations (EFA) the Exhibition “Test Your Allergies 2016” in the European Parliament in Brussels.
With nearly 400 people getting skin prick tested for allergies and visiting the exhibition site during the three days, the event successfully achieved its aim to raise awareness on the burden of allergies in Europe amongst EU policy-makers and the broader European civil society.
Initiated under the auspices of the European Parliament’s Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma and co-hosted by three of its members (Mrs Childers, Mrs Pietikaïnen and Mr Borrelli), the event started with an opening cocktail conference on the 26th of April, during which fruitful discussions were conducted on how to better prevent and manage allergy in Europe.
Main highlights include:
• Allergy and Asthma should be put at the forefront of EU Chronic Diseases policies given that they are the most common chronic diseases in Europe.
• Building on the momentum generated at EU level on food improvement and the promotion of healthy food in light with the current EU policy priorities, advocacy actions may integrate food allergy issues as a core topic. Preventive measures should be promoted as regards food allergens, especially targeting children.
• Enhancing collaboration with the patient community in advocacy should be considered an optimal means to achieve successful outcomes.
• Addressing air quality issues and raising awareness on pollution levels in urban settings need to be amongst the focal points of further European policy actionsIn conjunction to the event, EAACI Board of Officers had the opportunity to meet with key policy-makers in Brussels, including Health attachés from national governments and Members of the European Parliament. The meetings provided the occasion to inform on the organisation’s work and advocacy and discuss on improving the EU response to chronic diseases and allergy and foment research at European level in order to relieve the burden of patients affected by allergy and asthma across Europe.
As a result from this impactful advocacy actions, EAACI was delighted to welcome three new members in the European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma: Mrs Renate Sommer (Germany, EPP Group), Mrs Dubravka Suica (Croatia, EPP Group) and MEP Christel Schaldemose (S&D, Denmark).

Launch of the EP IG Allergy and Asthma – 25 March 2015
Members of European Parliament (MEPs) Sirpa Pietikainen and Nessa Childers, patients and doctors have joined forces in an Interest Group to take actions on allergy and asthma in Europe, launched on 25 March 2015 at the European Parliament. We are delighted that the European Commission Directorate General (DG) Research and Innovation, DG Environment, DG SANTE and the World Health Organisation Europe, together with our partners European Respiratory Society and Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) and industry representatives attended the launch.
Need to deal holistically and systematically with asthma and allergy
Over 150 million EU citizens live with allergies but half of them are underdiagnosed or have their disease uncontrolled. Around 30 million people in Europe have asthma and as many as 6 million of these people suffer severe symptoms. Allergy and asthma are amongst the most prevalent chronic diseases in Europe, in particular in children, although many patients do not report their symptoms or are not correctly diagnosed.
The Interest Group (IG) is an informal group of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) committed to give a clearer policy response to address allergy and asthma at the EU level.
It will serve to share expertise and help align interests to trigger EU policy actions on allergy and asthma health.
Members of the Group will provide a strong and unified contribution to EU policies on chronic diseases, air pollution, and research among others.
The Interest Group will bring attention to topics such as the following:
- Raising awareness of allergies as highly prevalent chronic diseases with a major socioeconomic burden requiring a policy coordinated response
- Promoting allergy health through health in all policies principle
- Fostering European research into allergic diseases
- Addressing inequalities and sharing best practices in European healthcare systems for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, involvement and care of allergic patients
- Training in allergology, among both general practitioners and specialists, and the cross-border movement of allergologists
- Exchange of patient centred national programmes to tackle the burden of allergic diseases to ensure best practices are applied in different EU Member States
- Prevention of allergic diseases by working among others on environment, chemicals in daily life products and food allergen labelling
Patients and doctors expect that such a dedicated Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma will help develop a network of MEP ambassadors supportive of research on the causes of allergy and asthma, prevention, treatment and management of these diseases, as well as raising awareness of the growing incidence of asthma and allergy in Europe. The Group will also be proactive in promoting a better quality of life and access to care of the patients. The European Commission health-related services, Member States health and research attachés, industry representatives, patients groups, academia and the public health community in general will be the key contributors to the Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma.
