EAACI Master Class on Occupational Allergy
Biomarkers and Personalized medicine in Occupational Respiratory Allergic Diseases
Madrid, Spain, 29 – 30 September 2017

Organisers: IG Environmental and Occupational Allergy

Educational aims
The rapid increase and application of molecular techniques to the field of asthma and allergic airway diseases has resulted in the emergence of new biomarkers for disease presence, susceptibility, and even differential response to treatment and allergen avoidance. These advances are also affecting occupational airways diseases, and the new tools and insights being developed are laying the foundation of precision or personalised medicine in the occupational respiratory field. The main goal of this master class will be to review the importance and role of different known and potential biomarkers useful to define the pathophysiological and clinical profiles of patients affected by occupational lung disease, particularly occupational asthma. In addition, the burden and the clinical aspects, phenotypes and pathophysiology of occupational allergic respiratory diseases will be addressed.

Expected outcome and potential impact in practice after the master class
By stimulating transnational exchange of experience and knowledge related to issue of application of molecular techniques to the field of occupational asthma and allergic airway diseases, the meeting will contribute to increase awareness of modern solutions in everyday practice and scientific research. All participants will have an opportunity to share their arguments and develop common innovative solutions aiming at increasing capacities of diagnostics of occupational allergy and further development of research practices.

Programme
The master class will be held over two days and will include lectures, workshops, practical discussions, a visit to challenge chambers and case presentations.

Topics covered:

  • International trends in the prevalence and incidence of occupational allergic respiratory diseases (work-related asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis)
  • New insights on the pathogenesis of allergic occupational asthma and irritant-induced asthma
  • Dose-response relationships with occupational allergens
  • Clinical investigations in patients with suspected occupational respiratory disease
  • Molecular diagnostics in the occupational setting
  • Standardized methods for nasal and bronchial provocation tests with occupational agents
  • Phenotypes of work-related asthma
  • Usefulness of biomarkers (sputum, serum, urine)
  • Occupational asthma in farming and in the food industry
  • Follow-up and outcome of patients with work-related asthma
  • Nasal and bronchial provocation tests with occupational allergens
  • Assessment of airway inflammation in the occupational setting

Target Audience
Whereas EAACI’s allergy schools are tailored for more junior attendees, master classes requires a higher level of professional experience and offers an excellent platform for the exchange of knowledge. However, age is not a criterion for exclusion.

This master class is intended for clinicians, researchers and lab specialists who want to learn more about Occupational Allergy.

CME Accreditation
The EAACI Master Class on Occupational Allergy, Biomarkers and Personalized medicine in Occupational Respiratory Allergic Diseases, Madrid, Spain, 29/09/2017-30/09/2017 has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) with 11 European CME credits (ECMEC®s). Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

EACCME® credits
Each participant can only receive the number of credits he/she is entitled to according to his/her actual participation at the event once he/she has completed the feedback form. Cf. criteria 9 and 23 of UEMS 2016.20. In order to help you issue individual certificates to each participants, please find below the breakdown of ECMEC®s per day:

29.09.2017 - 5,00
30.09.2017 - 6,00

The EACCME® awards ECMEC®s on the basis of 1 ECMEC® for one hour of CME with a maximum of 8 ECMEC®s per day. Cf. Chapter X of UEMS 2016.20.
